1890 MISSOURI VETERANS CENSUS INDEX
The 1890 special schedules of surviving soldiers, sailors, and marines, and their widows, were only intended to be for Union Veterans and spouses. But many Confederates must have been listed by accident. When the census taker visited each dwelling he asked the series of questions from the population schedules. One of the questions asked was whether there were any veterans or wives of veterans in the household. If the answer was positive, the census taker was supposed to pull out the separate special schedule and complete it.
In Southern part of Missouri, which had been divided during the Rebellion, some census takers actually listed Confederate veterans along with the others. Some were scratched out and some were not noticed and are still on the record.
