John Phillips Presley, 69, of Cumberland, Ky., formerly of  Asheville, departed this life on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002. A native of  Asheville, Mr. Presley lived in Cumberland for the past 35 years. He was the son of the late George and Hazel Shytle Presley and was also preceded in death by his brothers, David M. Presley and Dr. George Presley.

He was a graduate of Biltmore High School. He received his bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his master's degree from the University of Wyoming. Mr. Presley was a professor of history at Southeast Community College at Cumberland, Ky. He was a member of Cumberland Lions Club and division chair of social science at Southeast Community College.

He is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends in Kentucky, Florida and the Asheville area. The funeral services were held on Tuesday in Cumberland. The graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery in Asheville. The Rev. Harry Woggon will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John P. Presley Chair of History Fund, Southeast Community College, 700 College Road, Cumberland, KY 40823.

Morris Funeral Home, Merrimon Avenue, is in charge of the arrangements.
